Should I change locks after buying house?

Absolutely! As a matter of fact, that is one of the best times you should change your locks is after you buy a house. You never know if one of the realtors may have an extra key who had shown it to other people other than you or if the neighbors have one to let the dogs out when the previous owners were on vacation. It's imperative to do it as soon as you can to prevent unwanted guests in the middle of the night, like old tenants. We perform services for foreclosure homes and when leases are up and landlords need to resecure the unit.

Can I rekey a Kwikset lock without the original key?

Although much simpler to copy a key when there is one already that works, it is possible for a locksmith to make a key from a lock when it is missing as well. Using special tools for the type of lock we are able to read and cut a working key for the lock. Although time consuming, it is much easier to just replace the lock and rekey the new one to match the old one. Brands like Schlage and Kwikset can be disassembled and read to make a key to function.

Can a locksmith rekey any lock

Of course we can! That goes for any type of lock, not just residential locks. We can also rekey automotive door locks to new doors for autobody shops and ignition cylinders rekeyed to match the car. When wanting locks to match, it's important that the same keyway can fit in the locks. For example, Kwikset uses a KW1 keyway versus a Schlage which uses a SC1 keyway, both different from the other. When trying to insert a KW1 into a SC1 lock, the key will not even fit the cylinder.

Rekey vs replace locks

When it comes to cost, rekeying vs replacing locks will always be cheaper. Why? Because you're only paying for the labor that it takes to rekey the lock cylinders. When you need to have them replaced, it adds cost to the repair due to the added hardware. If the door locks function okay and look new, it may be a better option to just have them rekeyed. We can change the pin layout in the cylinder so that its different and requires a replacement key to operate the new wafers.
