Inside the Process: How Locksmiths Pinpoint Ignition Issues

Finding the root cause of why an ignition switch may fault out can be tricky if you don't know what you're looking for. Some quick tests to the system can determine if you need your lock replaced. First, insert the key into the cylinder, does it rotate smoothly to the accessory or on position? If not, try jiggling the key up and down, does it work now? If so, the wafers inside the lock are wearing down and need to be disassembled and repaired to work again. With electronic ignition systems, also known as an EIS, can fault out on its own, giving the driver issues rotating the fobik key. If we suspect it is something else with your system, we can run complete breakdown test of transponder ring to see if it's reading a signal from the chip inside the key, while also diagnosing any BCM errors that may relate to the immobilizer unit.

Ignition Cylinder Replacement Cost – What You Can Expect to Pay

When determining where to get your ignition cylinder serviced, price always comes into play, because you don't want to pay more for something that could have been done cheaper. The labor behind the replacement includes disconnecting the battery system to disarm airbag, removal of the old cylinder, making the necessary repairs including replacing the old springs and wafers to match the key pattern of your key so it can be used again. Reinstalling the new cylinder and testing the system out. Labor usually is billed for 3 hours to complete plus parts. You can expect to pay locksmiths in Columbus Ohio for this service in between $300-$450. Please not however, when compared to a dealership the cost is much higher when including a tow if the vehicle cannot be driven there.

Which Ignition Switch Does Your Vehicle Use? Find Out Here

How do you know what kind of ignition system is in your car? The terminology can be confusing at times if you're not mechanically inclined. Further, it could make you vulnerable to locksmiths that take advantage to customers that don't know much about their car. There are 3 different types of systems. Traditional, transponder and push to start. First, traditional, does not require a chip inside the key to start the automobile, it relies on a sidebar to prevent unauthorized tampering thus only requiring a stainless-steel key to operate. Second, transponder, this unlike the first does require a transponder chip inside the key to signal to the ring to say it's the correct key and can start, coming in both 2 sided and high security cut keys. Third, push to start, requiring a fob instead of a key altogether using only a button on the dashboard to start it without inserting anything.

Quick Fix or All-Day Job? Time Needed to Replace an Ignition Switch

While it may be true the billing is for 3 hours of labor, just like mechanics work on a flat rate, locksmiths do the same. Technically the job to get it completed usually takes about 2 hours to complete from start to finish. If you're attempting to do it yourself the first time, expect to take at least 6 hours. Also note, new keys will need to be programmed if lock is not being rekeyed by a professional locksmith. Avoiding us is kind of impossible for the job however you want to tackle it.

Which Vehicle Brands Have the Most Ignition Cylinder Failures? Find Out the Top Offenders

Weve narrowed it down for you the top car manufacturers that fault out the most for ignition switch cylinders. Although there is nothing wrong with the functionality of the switches for both Hyundai and Kia, there lies a different defect, it's too easy to steal the vehicle. The ignition assembly is made out plastic making it simple to break apart and remove the needed part that prevents unwanted theft.

Second brand that we see quite often is Honda. It happens throughout many of their models including the Accord, Civic, and the CRV as well. It is simply a defect in the design of how the switch is built. It requires a 2-system wafer design that requires 2 wafers to work together to complete the bitting. If these are slightly bent, it can prevent the ignition from rotating over at all.

Third is the VW, the ignition will want to rotate slightly but not fully over into the on position. Sometimes replacing just the switch is not good enough and the whole assembly is recommended to be replaced due to other components that have failed internally inside.

And finally, the GM, the sidebar springs can wear out over time preventing the key to rotate over to start. The only way to get it working again is by installing a new one in its place.

Replacing Your Ignition Switch Yourself: Smart Move or Risky Repair?

Weve all used YouTube at one point or another to learn how to do something, some auto repairs can be simple to do yourself while other parts are better left off for the experts to repair. Replacing an ignition cylinder is no easy task because of the risk of working around the ABS airbag. Working with a hammer near the windshield, you have to be cautious not to break the glass while trying to loosen bolts that have no head on them which makes for some very odd positions in the car. Having a certified locksmith in Columbus OH makes all the difference in the world to having something done the right way, including replacing ignitions.

Called he got me in the next day to change my ignition cylinder on my car, which was more difficult than most, because of my make and model car. The mechanic that diagnosed my  car wasn't able to do the job. He knows what he's doing, quick and efficient,  and has reasonable prices. 5 stars. Highly recommend.
