A locksmith should always ask for proof of ownership whenever performing locksmith services, this protects the owner of the property as well as you as a business owner. Along with a valid photo ID, it's important that both names match the documentation, because this is what ties all the documentation back to the owner.

When checking proof of ownership for a vehicle, a locksmith should be mindful of making sure the VIN matches the vehicle along with year make and model of vehicle by use of decoding the VIN through software means and comparing the information with whichever document is present. This can be a valid vehicle registration, proof of insurance for the car or title. Making sure the photo ID matches the proof of ownership paperwork, whichever that may be. This protects the locksmith from giving the keys to the wrong person. Whenever service is requested, it is best practice to deal directly with the owner of the vehicle, because they are the only ones legally allowed to give authorization to make the key replacement.

For residential locksmith service, proof of ownership is still required in order to do any kind of lock work, this includes lock replacement and lock rekey services. For homeowners, a property deed, mortgage statement, utility bill that is current or previous county tax document will suffice. For renters it can vary a little different from homeowners, a current rental agreement, utility bill that is recent or rent receipt for the previous month will work.

The most important thing to remember, is making sure all documentation matches and can be connected back to the individual that is requesting the locksmith service.
